The JD/MBA @ Duke

Duke Law School and The Fuqua School of Business have a combined program of study in law and graduate level business administration.  The program provides the opportunity to acquire an education in both law and business administration in four years.  Upon satisfactory completion of the required course of study, candidates will be awarded both the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and the Juris Doctor (JD) degrees.

Students accepted to both The Fuqua School of Business or Duke Law School at the same time may begin their JD/MBA degree at either school.  If the student begins in the Law School, the first-year curriculum is the same as that of the other law students; if the student begins at Fuqua, the first-year curriculum is the same as that of other business students.  The student's second year consists of the full first-year program of the other school.  In the third and fourth years of the program, the student takes courses in both schools, with about two-thirds of the courses taken in the Law School.

JD/MBA Academic Requirements

Normally, joint JD/MBA students enroll at the Law School first and then attend The Fuqua School of Business during their second year of graduate school.

Each student is required to take a minimum of 65 credits at Fuqua. At least forty- four of those credits are taken during the first full year at the school.

Elective courses may be substituted for any exempted courses but 65 Fuqua credits are still required. No coursework outside of Fuqua will count towards a Duke MBA and students must register at Fuqua for any courses that will count toward their required 65 MBA credits.

In addition, the Law School requires 72 credits with a minimum of 10 credits during most of the student's semesters while registered there.

Students must register at the Law School for any courses that will count toward their 72 JD credits.

Students are required to pay four full semesters of Fuqua's tuition and four full semesters of tuition at the Law School.

Course credits will only count once.
