LEADING IN A NON-TRADITIONAL ENVIRONMENT
Congresswoman Shelley Capito, Randall Pinkett & Kara Bates
Q: What do the Army, TV’s “The Apprentice,” and Congress all have in common?
A: They will all be represented on this dynamic panel to discuss leadership in high visibility roles.
Come ask Randall Pinkett, 4th Apprentice Winner, Shelley Moore Capito, WV Congresswoman, and Kara Bates, Army attack helicopter commander in second Iraqi war, about finding success when the odds seem stacked against you. Is it possible to find success when there is a spotlight on you? How do you convert challengers into allies and how do you handle those that won’t follow your lead? This is your opportunity to learn how to quickly assess your environment and determine the best path to navigate. |

SECRETS OF INFLUENCE: Inspiring, Motivating and Persuading Others
Christine Donovan (Christine Donovan & Associates)
Management consultant Ken Blanchard has said that "the key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority." While today's business leaders are taught essential business and technical skills, they often lack the people skills wherein lie the true keys to success. Possessing an ability to influence is an essential competency affecting all primary business relationships, including peers, managers, competitors, partners, customers, and direct reports.
This interactive workshop offers participants concepts and skills application for influencing others, including:
I. The Fundamentals of Influence
What makes an individual influential?
II. The Types of Influence
Financial, Personal, Political, Positional Influence.
III. Some Basic Laws of Persuasion
Featuring the Laws of Reciprocity, Contrast and Association, and Empathy.
IV. Organizational Influence
The Importance of "Managing Up," the Power of Peer Relationships, and Leading through Influence.
V. Principles of Influential Leadership
Vision and Constancy of Purpose, Appreciating Differences, and the Value of Listening over Lecturing.
VI. The Qualities of Influential People
Graciousness, Even-Temperament, Fairness, Integrity, and Empathy. |
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
COL Donna Brazil and MAJ John Murphy (West Point Professors)
Today's work environment often dictates that managers possess various leadership styles. With the work force becoming more complex due to generational gaps, it is necessary for leaders to understand how their actions can quickly support or degrade the performance of their team. Many leaders can mitigate the negative effects of the stress, but exceptional leaders can leverage the emotions in a constructive, positive way. This workshop will explore what Emotional Intelligence is, why it is important for leaders to possess it, and how they can develop it. Through an interactive approach, the workshop leaders will incorporate personal examples, film clips, and other learning vehicles to bring to life this cutting-edge topic.

CONSENSUS-BUILDING AND NEGOTIATION
David Fairman (The Consensus Building Institute)
While it is true that how we handle conflict and crisis can define us as leaders, it is also true that many overlook how a leader can create an environment that is conducive to consensus-building and conflict prevention.
Every day, corporate leaders face challenges from people who believe that the company’s actions are jeopardizing their health, safety, livelihoods, and cultures. A global network of advocates for social equity, environmental protection, and human rights helps document and amplify their concerns.
Come learn:
How to increase buy-in of internal and external constituencies.
How to lead in a dynamic environment.
How to avoid potential conflict.
Which stakeholders you should engage and how.

Darran Wells (National Outdoor Leadership School-NOLS)
