MBA Games Weekend
April 4th - 6th, 2008

In past years, teams from these business schools have joined Fuqua in the Games:

Carnegie Mellon • Columbia • Cornell • Dartmouth • Emory • Georgetown • Harvard • Michigan • Northwestern • NYU • UNC • Chicago • Wharton • Darden • Wake Forest

What other organization on campus can offer you the chance to:

  • Swim the length of a pool in a business suit?

  • Hurl a briefcase into the air for distance?

  • Navigate a challenging but FUN obstacle course?

What are The Duke MBA Games? In 1989, a group of students decided to invite their friends from other top business schools to Durham to enjoy the warm spring weather while raising money for the Special Olympics North Carolina. Since then, the Duke MBA Games has evolved into the largest student run event on campus.

Event Descriptions

Scoring for All Events:

  • 1st Place: 5 points
  • 2nd Place: 3 points
  • 3rd  Place: 1 point

Ties: If an event is judged to be a tie, the tied teams split the points for the appropriate places.  If two teams tie for 1st and 2nd, then each get 4 points (5+3 / 2).  If two teams tie for 2nd, they each get 2 points (and no team gets points for 3rd Place).  In each of these cases, only three teams should be awarded points.  If two (or more) teams tie for 3rd Place, they split the points evenly – this is the only situation in which more than three teams would be awarded points for an event.

Foosball Tournament (sponsored by Bonzini USA):

  • Two members from each school will form one foosball team
  • Each team will compete in a single-elimination bracket torunament
  • Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams

Beanbag Toss - 1 Male, 1 Female, 1 Special Olympic Athlete:

  • Each participant will have 60 seconds to throw as many beanbags into a target as possible
  • There will be players throwing concurrently at multiple locations
  • 2 members of each team will be responsible for retrieving the beanbags while he/she is throwing (each player will start with 3 beanbags)
  • Teams will be ranked by cumulative scores of 2 participants

Cheer-off:

Three judges will judge the event based on creativity, originality and team spirit.

Cheers should be less than 2 minutes. Topics are open, but cheers should concentrate mostly on positive items and potentially the value of the Special Olympics.

5K Run:

  • Three team members participate (2 guys, 1 girl).
  • Points will be awarded based on overall team time.

Ocean Cruise:

This is an inflatable raft relay race involving 4 team members. The winner is fastest team to paddle their raft one length of the pool and back.

  • Two team members will start in the raft (1 guy, 1 girl).  Other two members will be stationed on the deck at the other end of the pool (1 guy, 1 girl).
  • At the far end of the pool the two team members will exit the raft.  The second pair of team members cannot enter the raft until the first two have exited.
  • There will be 3 heats of 4-5 boats each.  The top finisher from each heat will compete in the final.  Positions 1, 2, and 3 will be determined by finishing order in the final.
  • Team members must be seated entirely inside the raft (ie no laying down on top of the raft and kicking). Any team doing so will be disqualified.

Swimsuit Relay:

This will be a swimming relay race involving 4 team members.  Each teammate must swim one length of the pool wearing business attire.

The first team member will put on a suit (pants and jacket) outside the pool and then swim the entire length. The first team member must then exit the pool (the other team members may assist in exiting the pool since this is very difficult to do). The team member must then take off the suit (this must be done unassisted) and hand each piece to the next team member who will put on the suit unassisted. The race continues until the fourth team member touches the wall (the fourth team member does not need to exit the pool).

  • Teams will be disqualified if they help a team member remove the suit.
  • Both articles of clothing must be all the way on before the person enters the pool.

Briefcase Toss:

  • Student can pick any briefcase
  • Student must kneel on ground (both knees must stay firmly on the ground throughout the whole toss)
  • Student cannot cross the line at any time
  • Student gets one “freebie” if he goes over the line or if he throws it out of bounds
  • Judge will have to mark off each throw to determine length of throws
  • Winner throws the briefcase the farthest

50 M Dash:

  • On the starting judge’s mark, all runners will start.  False starts will require that all runners re-start.  Two false starts by the same runner will disqualify that runner.
  • Judges will note the order of finish.

Izzy Dizzy Bat Relay:

Teams are made up of 6 participants (at least 2 men and 2 women). At the sound of the whistle, the first participant will pick up the baseball bat such that the wide end of the bat is on the ground and his/her forehead is on the handle. The participant will spin around the bat ten times.  Removing the bat from the ground is not allowed and the participant must spin completely around in order for the revolution to count as on of the ten rotations. All revolutions must be done in the same direction. To ensure this rule is adhered to, judges will be located at the cones and will count each revolution out loud. Judges are responsible for making sure that each participant completes ten revolutions. After completing ten rotations, the participant then returns to the starting line and touches the hand of the next runner. The next runner may not cross the starting line until the previous runner has touched them. The winning team is the first team to cross the finish line.  The judges must ensure that each participant rotates ten times with the bats; otherwise will we have to disqualify the team.

Relay (3-legged, wheelbarrow):

  • Two lines of cones will be set up, roughly 25-30 yards apart
  • Teams will consist of 6 competitors, and should pair off and decide on an order in which to run
  • Each pair should tie their inside legs together (right leg of one partner tied to left leg of the other partner) with a bandana.
  • On the judge’s mark, Pair 1 for each team will run to the opposite line, they will then turn around and come back “wheelbarrow” style.
  • If the bandana falls off before a pair has reached the line, they must re-secure it before they continue.
  • After Pair 1 crosses the original start line, pair 2 starts running (same thing as Pair 1).  After Pair 2 crosses the start line, Pair 3 starts.
  • The team is finished when Pair 3 crosses the original start line as determined by the judge.

Tug of War:

  • Setup:  Tug-of-War rope will have a bandana tied in the center of the rope.  Two more marker bandanas will be tied to the rope – each 10 feet on either side of the center mark.  The competition will start with the center mark aligned with a cone.  Teams will flip a coin to determine starting side.
  • Teams will set up with all competitors behind their marker bandana.
  • On the judge’s mark, teams will start tugging.
  • The first team to pull the rope far enough so that the other team’s marker bandana crosses the center cone is the winner.
  • Match-ups will be determined by random draw.

Basketball:

Each team will be comprised of one athlete and two (1 male, 1 female) school representatives.  Each shooter will be given 30 seconds to score as many points as possible.  Points are as follows: Layup (1pt), free throw (2pts), three pointer (3pts).  Team that scores the most combined points wins.  School representatives must not shoot the same shot twice in a row (they have to move to different spots on the court). Players will use 1 ball and 1 basket at a time.  Another member of a player’s team will be responsible for rebounding while that player is shooting.
