Visited Durham’s new alternative to urban loft-style living and talked with Mark Barker of Wood Partners. He discussed the devlopmental aspects of the project and provided a tour of the project.

University Tower in Durham

On Thursday, September 30th, the Real Estate Club enjoyed its 2nd Annual road trek to University Tower, Durham’s very own skyscraper.  An enthusiastic presentation on the University Tower acquisition process was given by Michael Hemmerich, owner of University Tower, Co-founder and President of Dilweg Companies, and one of Fuqua’s associate deans.  Mike also provided the club with a glimpse of future development plans, both for the building and its surrounding area.  A reception followed in the Tower’s private club.

Michael Hemmerich is a triple Dukie. He received is undergrad, JD, and MBA from Duke University and is a significant contributor to Fuqua.

Mr. Casden, a Los Angeles based real-estate mogul, has developed over 90,000 apartment units (including a large number of tax-favored affordable housing units) with an aggregate acquisition and development cost of approximately $7 billion. In 2002 Mr. Casden merged his portfolio of properties into AIMCO, a large apartment REIT, in a transaction valued at $1.95 billion.  He then formed Casden Properties LLC to plan and develop new multifamily properties.  This company has approximately $2.5 billion in multifamily projects underway and in the development pipeline.
