Being engaged in our community through volunteer experiences with Durham non-profit organizations gives Fuqua students a chance to give back to the community we are living and studying in. Social Impact Club (SIC) helps to organize various opportunities for the Fuqua students, faculty, and partners to get involved.
Day in Durham

Every year, CASE and SIC in partnership with the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership organize an event to introduce Fuqua students to the Durham community. The goal of the event is to whet the students’ appetites for getting involved in the Durham community during their two years at Fuqua, for seeing first hand the relevance of their MBA training and skills when tackling social problems, and for embarking upon careers in business with an understanding of and commitment to responsible business and community leadership. Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement is a way for the Fuqua community to give back to students from Kindergarten through Junior High by teaching them lessons regarding business principles. All it takes is about an hour a week for 8 weeks. This is a great opportunity to make an impact in someone's life.
At Bat for Habitat

The House That Fuqua Built is a leadership development and community service partnership between the MBAA, COLE, and Habitat for Humanity of Durham. In its first year, the project goals are to build a house for a local Durham family and use the volunteer time during construction to provide leadership and teamwork coaching to first year Fuqua students. The House That Fuqua Built will provide Fuqua students with exposure to their community in a manner that fits within the goals of developing future business leaders.
Construction is planned for November 4th through April 20th, with student, faculty, and staff volunteers working Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the school year. This year, students from both classes will be able to give time to Habitat for Humanity. The construction shifts provide a great opportunity for team building, and several first year ILE teams will receive leadership coaching from the COLE Leadership Fellows. In future years, the goal is to provide this unique, non-traditional coaching to all first year students and make The House That Fuqua Built and integral part of the Fuqua experience.
STEP
The goal of the Student Teaching Entrepreneurship Program (STEP) is to bring Fuqua students into the community to help teach high school students entrepreneurship - raising their awareness of the entrepreneurial career path and helping them develop the confidence and skills to pursue ventures of their own. STEP brings Fuqua mentors to the entrepreneurship classroom and mentors student developing business plans that will be entered into state and national competitions (run by DECA) - Fuqua mentors help student develop their ideas and provide real world insight into the various elements of the plan, based on the Fuqua mentors backgrounds and courses. Furthermore, STEP provides for a field trip to Fuqua, where the high school students gain the opportunity to practice their public speaking and presentation skills. STEP currently runs through Terms 1 & 2, and is open to all MBA students.
